TMF – Tele Management Forum

The TM Forums’ Open API Manifesto aims to close gaps between incoming business requirements and the technical service deployment to meet the business needs.

CSP’s (Communications Service Provider) customers place service orders on various platforms provided by the CSP, which contain detailed requirements and feature sets. Project or Account Management teams act on it with infra/ human/ technical resources to deliver the service. TM Forum brings all these under one umbrella by providing practical toolkits, frameworks, and Open APIs.

Open API is a documented way of interacting with a particular system, typically using its REST API. These are YAML/ JSON documents detailing REST APIs Request and Response characteristics. Many CSPs have demonstrated their endorsement of this initiative by pledging to make it a requirement in their RFPs (Request For Proposal) for any new products/technologies they onboard in their infrastructure.

A significant transformation from Open APIs occurs in the Network Service Orchestration systems. These systems must be compatible with the “Open Digital Architecture” to deploy the services after receiving directives from high-level Business Apps.

CSPs must partner with others to provide an end-to-end service to their global customers. A similar set of services (e.g., Carrier Ethernet, IP VPN, MPLS, etc.) must be deployed in a partner CSP network to support the customer; the only difference is, for the partner CSP, the primary CSP takes the customer role.

To summarize, TMF provides a common platform for CSPs to create business apps. These business apps, in the backend, can interact with the underlying network management. The network infrastructure, in turn, deploys services at scale within the minimum amount of time and in a vendor-agnostic fashion which relates to not just the initial deployment of the service but its complete life cycle.

What are the top benefits of this technology?

CSP Offering Cataloging

TMF Open APIs, models, processes, and CSPs have a standard and interoperable way of defining and distributing service catalogs. Aligning to standard APIs helps the client CSPs, NMS, and other related system providers create service catalogs that cater to new customer demands with very few iterations.

Accelerate Service Implementation

CSPs can lower their service implementation time by working with a TMF-compliant provider (such as Anuta ATOM).

Less Firefighting and more Innovation

TMF APIs and compliant providers help reduce the burden of repetitive tasks and provide an opportunity to achieve network teams’ full potential.

Time to market reduction

The period from the conception of an offering to delivering it to customers would be significantly reduced as all the systems involved follow the same architectural principles.

CSP potential boost

New Technologies keep coming; therefore, new services must be developed by CSPs. New products and service offerings are delivered much quicker due to the alignment of internal systems to the standard architecture.

Easy Integration to new systems

If a CSP decides to abide by the TMF manifesto, all the new systems it onboards will be constrained to work as per TMF guidelines/Open APIs, reducing the period of production deployment of that system.

How does ATOM implement it?

Network Resources and Service Provisioning

ATOM implements the ‘Network Resources and Network Service Provisioning’ subset of TMF Open APIs: Service definition, Service orders, Service monitoring, Resource Management, etc.

Delivery time reduction

ATOM eliminates internal delays caused by slow processes in large organizations between service ordering and service deployment.

Quote to Cash

The CSP customer is quoted an amount for the service once it is rendered. Thus, ATOM accelerates the cash conversion cycle and aids quick service deployment on the network elements.
